The danger posed by static electricity when transferring product into or out of Type C Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBCs) can be controlled by a new, specifically designed monitoring system.
The Earth-Rite FIBC earthing system continuously monitors Type C FIBC, (often known as Big Bags, Bulk Bags or Super Sacks) ensuring that the containers' static dissipative features are still within the correct specifications and achieving a good positive earth connection. Although Type C FIBCs are made of or contain conductive material that should dissipate static build-up this does not provide positive assurance that static build-up will not occur as other external factors might be involved.
For example, the earthing clamp may not be properly attached or the conductive fibres of the bag may have been damaged during previous use.
The Earth-Rite FIBC system provides verification that the static dissipative construction of the container is functional and that it is correctly earthed.
The system also provides clear visual indication of earth condition via red/green LEDs and the systems interlock will allow product transfer only when the resistance through the container is less than 1x10^8 Ohms, helping personnel to observe correct and safe operating procedures.
The system utilises a special monitoring clamp that should be attached to the conductive earth connection of the FIBC.
This clamp is connected to a chemical and abrasion resistant Cen-Stat spiral cable and forms the monitoring connection so that the resistance through the FIBC and down to ground earth can be monitored.
The static dissipation path is provided by the lifting hooks which should be connected to earth.
If the lifting hooks cannot be used for earthing, the system verifies the resistance between the monitoring connection and an additional clamp and cable connection and down to earth.
While Type C FIBC applications are most common, the system can also be used to monitor similar static dissipative materials such as drum linings, kegs, hoses, etc.
The Earth-Rite FIBC system is ATEX approved, intrinsically safe and is suitable for use in virtually all potentially explosive atmosphere zones/locations.
